Automated tiering in a QoS environment using sparse data

چکیده
We present a method for providing automated performance management for a storage array with quality of service demands. Our method dynamically configures application data to heterogeneous storage devices, taking into account response time targets for the different applications. The optimization process uses widely available coarse counter statistics. We use analytical modeling of the storage system components and a gradient descent mechanism to minimize the target function. We verify the effectiveness of our optimization procedure using traces from real production systems, and show that our method improves the performance of the more significant applications, and can do so using only the coarse statistics. Our results show substantial improvements for preferred applications over an optimization procedure which does not take QoS requirements into account. We also present evidence of the complex behavior of real production storage systems, which has to be taken into account in the optimization process.

Making Sense of Automated Tiering
Storage tiering is a technology solution to one of the fundamental IT challenges; data growth and cost containment. But while the concept is simple, its implementation has proved to be complex. Identifying and moving data sets between the different tiers of storage turned out to be much harder than just creating the storage tiers themselves. With SSDs, deduplicated archives and cloud storage ad...

This white paper examines the application of managing Microsoft SQL Server in a storage environment utilizing multiple storage configurations to optimize performance costeffectiveness of storage allocations. Practical examples are provided of automated data movement between storage tiers to meet performance requirements for SQL Server databases and cost-effectiveness of EMC Symmetrix VMAXTM res...
متن کاملQoS-Based web service composition based on genetic algorithm
Quality of service (QoS) is an important issue in the design and management of web service composition. QoS in web services consists of various non-functional factors, such as execution cost, execution time, availability, successful execution rate, and security. In recent years, the number of available web services has proliferated, and then offered the same services increasingly. The same web ...
متن کاملImproving Performance of Opportunistic Routing Protocol using Fuzzy Logic for Vehicular Ad-hoc Networks in Highways
Vehicular ad hoc networks are an emerging technology with an extensive capability in various applications including vehicles safety, traffic management and intelligent transportation systems. Considering the high mobility of vehicles and their inhomogeneous distributions, designing an efficient routing protocol seems necessary. Given the fact that a road is crowded at some sections and is not c...
